Can AI Mix Your Music Without Losing Your Sound?
The history of music technology is largely a history of removing technical barriers. Recording made performances reproducible. Digital audio made editing more precise. The DAW put an entire studio inside a computer. AI is now taking that process further, beginning to automate decisions that once required years of engineering experience.
But as technical barriers disappear, a more interesting question emerges: where does AI actually belong in the creative workflow?
In the latest RealMusic.ai podcast, David Ronan, founder and CEO of RoEx, explores that question through the changing role of AI in mixing, mastering, and music creation. His perspective comes from both sides of the industry: as a musician and as someone building technology designed to change how music is produced.

That approach points to a more practical role for AI in music. Instead of replacing creative decisions, it can make technical expertise more accessible while allowing the artist to remain responsible for the direction.
For independent musicians, that distinction has real consequences. Mixing and mastering can be major barriers to finishing a record, particularly for creators without access to experienced engineers or expensive studio environments. If AI can handle parts of that complexity, more musicians may be able to take a song from an unfinished session to a releasable track.
The value is not simply speed. It is the ability to finish the work.
But as professional-level production becomes more accessible, another shift may occur. If technically polished music becomes easier to produce, technical quality alone becomes less useful as a measure of distinction. More music can sound professional. What becomes harder to automate is the reasoning behind the choices.
That is why David’s discussion of taste is particularly relevant.
An AI system can analyze patterns in sound, respond to references, and make technically informed adjustments. Understanding why an artist wants a particular vocal to remain imperfect, why a mix needs more space, or why a certain production choice supports the identity of a song is a more complicated problem.
Taste is not simply a technical preference. It is built from experience, influences, context, and intention.
David also looks at where these tools could go next, including personalized mixing, creative discovery, and AI-assisted restoration. These applications suggest that AI may become less like a single production tool and more like an intelligent layer across the workflow.
That raises an important question for creators: which parts of the process should be automated, and which decisions should remain theirs?
The answer may differ from artist to artist. What matters is that AI becomes useful without turning the creative process into a black box.
As David’s experience with RoEx demonstrates, the most meaningful advances may not come from making AI do everything. They may come from making sophisticated production capabilities available to more musicians while preserving the decisions that give their work a distinct identity.
AI can make mixing and mastering more accessible. It can help artists overcome technical barriers and finish more of what they start. But the technology still needs a creative direction to follow.
